Also known as: Opos; OPOS
OPOS Limited is a UK debt collection and debt purchase company. It buys portfolios of consumer debt and manages the recovery of those debts. OPOS has historically focused on purchasing older or higher-risk debt portfolios, often from payday lenders and short-term credit providers.
When OPOS purchases a debt, it becomes the legal owner. If you receive correspondence from OPOS about a debt, it means a company you previously owed money to has sold that debt to OPOS. The original lender no longer manages the debt.
OPOS is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and must treat customers fairly. You have the right to ask for written details of any debt they are pursuing, including the original creditor and account reference, and a copy of the original credit agreement.
If the debt being claimed is very old, it may be statute barred under the Limitation Act 1980, meaning it is no longer legally enforceable in court. Citizens Advice or National Debtline can help you check this.
If you owe the debt and cannot pay in full, contact OPOS to discuss what you can afford. Free debt advice is available from StepChange on 0800 138 1111, National Debtline on 0808 808 4000, or Citizens Advice. These services are completely free.
