Hidden Subscriptions: Recurring Payments You Might Have Forgotten

Most households have at least one subscription they have completely forgotten about. Here are the most commonly overlooked ones.

Free trials that became paid

Free trial to paid conversion is the most common source of forgotten subscriptions. After seven, fourteen or thirty days, billing begins automatically. Unless you cancelled, you are still paying.

Common culprits: Amazon Prime (if signed up for a trial and forgot), Apple iCloud (started at the free tier and accidentally upgraded), Adobe Creative Cloud, Audible, Kindle Unlimited.

Rarely used streaming services

Households with multiple video streaming services often have one or two that are barely watched. Apple TV+, Paramount+, BritBox and AMC+ are common "forgotten" ones added for a specific show and never cancelled.

Software and cloud storage

Microsoft 365 family subscriptions that continued after the initial need. Dropbox or Google Drive storage upgrades. Antivirus software that auto-renewed. VPN services started for a specific purpose.

Wellness and fitness

Gym memberships that auto-renew even when not attended. Meditation apps (Calm, Headspace). Fitness apps with premium tiers. These are particularly common "guilt subscriptions" — people keep them hoping to start using them again.

Delivery and food

Deliveroo Plus, Just Eat, Uber Eats passes. Wine or food box deliveries (Hello Fresh, Gousto, Naked Wines) that you paused but billing resumed. Amazon Subscribe & Save for items you no longer need.

Check bank and credit card statements for recurring payments. Search your email for "receipt", "subscription", "billing" and "renewal". Check your Google Play and Apple App Store subscription lists.

Possibly. Contact the provider and explain. Many will offer a partial refund for recent charges on unused services, particularly on annual subscriptions. It is always worth asking.
