Current easy-access rates ~4-5%. Enter 0 if unsure.
Enter your savings target — this might be an emergency fund, a house deposit, a car replacement, a holiday or any other specific goal. Enter how much you have already saved toward it and how much you plan to contribute each month. The interest rate field defaults to 4.5%, which is broadly representative of easy-access savings accounts in mid-2026 — update this to match your actual account rate.
The calculator shows how long it will take to reach your target including the effect of compound interest. Even at relatively low interest rates, the compounding effect over two or three years is meaningful and worth including in your planning.
The most important savings goal for most people is an emergency fund — typically three to six months of essential expenses. For a household spending £1,800 per month on essentials, that means a target of £5,400 to £10,800. Starting with a smaller first milestone of £500 or £1,000 is often more motivating than aiming for the full amount immediately.
For house deposits, the Lifetime ISA adds a 25% Government bonus on contributions up to £4,000 per year — worth checking if you are aged 18-39 and saving for a first home. This calculator does not account for LISA bonuses, but the effect of the bonus is significant: £4,000 contributed becomes £5,000 with the Government top-up.
The single most effective habit for reaching a savings goal is automating your contribution on payday. Set up a standing order to transfer your monthly savings amount on the day your wages arrive. This removes the decision from your monthly routine and means the money is saved before you have a chance to spend it. Even modest automated contributions consistently reach their targets faster than larger but irregular manual transfers.
