Selling online
eBay, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, Depop and Etsy can all be managed entirely from home. Vinted in particular has seen huge growth for selling second-hand clothing with no selling fees.
Photography for listings can be done with a smartphone. Most platforms handle payment processing. Postage can be arranged online without visiting a post office.
Freelance services
If you have professional skills — writing, editing, design, social media management, bookkeeping, web development, virtual assistant work — these translate directly into home-based freelance income.
Fiverr is good for starting out and building a portfolio. Upwork suits longer client relationships. LinkedIn is effective for higher-value B2B work.
Online tutoring
Online tutoring via platforms such as Tutor.com, Superprof, MyTutor or independent advertising can generate £20-£40 per hour. A UK degree is typically sufficient for most GCSE and A-Level subjects. No teaching qualification is required for private tutoring.
Surveys, tasks and micro-jobs
Paid surveys (Prolific, YouGov, Branded Surveys) and small online tasks (Amazon Mechanical Turk, Clickworker) provide modest income — typically a few pounds per hour. They are flexible and low effort but should not be treated as a primary income strategy.
Prolific focuses on academic research and tends to pay better than general survey platforms.
