Also known as: Cabot Financial; Cabot Credit Management
Cabot Financial is one of the UK's largest debt purchase and debt collection businesses. It buys unpaid debts from banks, credit card companies, utilities, and other lenders, and then works to recover what is owed. When Cabot buys a debt, it becomes the legal owner and takes over responsibility for collecting it.
If you receive a letter or call from Cabot Financial, it means a debt you originally had with another company has been sold to Cabot. The original lender will no longer be managing the debt. Cabot is now the company you need to deal with regarding that account.
Cabot is required to follow FCA rules and must treat customers fairly and with respect. They should give you clear information about the debt, including which original lender it came from, the original account number, and the amount owed. You have the right to ask for a written statement of the debt and a copy of the original credit agreement.
If you believe you do not owe the debt, or if the amount seems incorrect, you can dispute it. Cabot must investigate any genuine dispute. Citizens Advice and National Debtline can help you understand how to do this.
Many people find it possible to agree a payment arrangement with Cabot or, in some cases, to negotiate a settlement figure. Free debt advice organisations can help you approach these conversations from an informed position.
Do not ignore correspondence from Cabot. Engaging is generally better than avoiding. Free and confidential debt advice is available from StepChange on 0800 138 1111, National Debtline on 0808 808 4000, or Citizens Advice.
