Also known as: Equita; ColX Group (parent brand)
Equita Limited is a UK enforcement agency — commonly referred to as a bailiff company. It is authorised to carry out enforcement action on behalf of creditors who have obtained court judgments, primarily local councils for council tax debt and parking fines, as well as HMRC and other government bodies.
Enforcement agents (bailiffs) have legal powers that ordinary debt collectors do not. If Equita contacts you, it means a creditor has obtained a court judgment and is using legal enforcement to recover what is owed. However, enforcement agents must follow strict rules about what they can and cannot do.
Enforcement agents can visit your home, but they cannot force entry on a first visit. On a subsequent visit, if you have previously let them in and a controlled goods agreement exists, they may be able to re-enter. They can take certain assets but cannot take essential household items, tools of your trade up to a certain value, or goods belonging to other people.
If Equita contacts you, act quickly. You may be able to challenge the debt, set up a payment plan before agents visit, or seek help to delay enforcement. Free advice is urgently available from Citizens Advice on 0800 144 8848, StepChange on 0800 138 1111, or National Debtline on 0808 808 4000. Time is important — seeking advice before a visit gives you more options.
