Free school meals are available to school-age children from families meeting income and benefit eligibility criteria. They save qualifying families around £500-£700 per child per year. Universal free school meals are also available automatically for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in England.
Who qualifies in England (income-based)
A child qualifies if their parent or carer receives: Universal Credit with net earned income of no more than £7,400 per year, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit with no Working Tax Credit and income under £16,190, or support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
Universal entitlement for infant school children
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in England are entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals regardless of income. Even if your child already receives these, apply for income-based free school meals if you qualify — this registers your child for Pupil Premium funding which schools use to provide additional educational support.
Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programmes
During school holidays, some local authorities provide HAF programmes for children eligible for income-based free school meals. These provide free childcare activities and healthy meals during Easter, summer and Christmas holidays. Check your local council's website.
How to apply
