According to Policy in Practice, around £23 billion in means-tested benefits goes unclaimed in the UK each year. The most common reason is not fraud — it is that people do not realise they qualify.
Pension Credit
Around a third of people entitled to Pension Credit do not claim it. It is a means-tested benefit for those over State Pension age on low incomes. Claiming it also unlocks other entitlements including free TV licences and winter fuel support.
Child Benefit
Some families with higher earners do not claim Child Benefit to avoid the High Income Child Benefit Charge — but may still benefit from claiming it even if they have to pay some back. It also counts towards National Insurance credits.
Carer's Allowance
If you care for someone for 35 hours or more a week who receives certain disability benefits, you may qualify for Carer's Allowance. Many carers are unaware this applies to them.
Free School Meals
Children from households receiving Universal Credit or certain other benefits may qualify for free school meals. Some families eligible for this do not apply.
Healthy Start vouchers
If you are pregnant or have a child under four and receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for Healthy Start vouchers to spend on food and vitamins.
