Council Tax Reduction (also called Council Tax Support) is a scheme run by local councils to help people on low incomes pay their council tax bill. It can reduce your bill by a significant amount — in some cases to zero.

Who might qualify

Each council runs its own scheme with its own rules, but in general you may be eligible if you are on a low income, receive certain benefits, are a full-time student, have a disability, or live alone.

How to check

  • Visit your local council website and search for Council Tax Reduction
  • Most councils have an online application form or eligibility checker
  • You will need details of your income, savings, and who lives in your property
  • Use Turn2Us or entitledto for an independent estimate before applying

Single person discount

Separately, if you are the only adult in your property, you are entitled to a 25% single person discount on your council tax bill. This applies regardless of income. Contact your council if you have not already applied for this.

Backdating

Some councils can backdate a Council Tax Reduction claim. If you have been eligible but have not claimed, it is worth asking your council whether a backdated claim is possible.
