Fastest wins: immediate impact
Register on the electoral roll at your current address. This is one of the quickest improvements you can make and has immediate effect on your credit profile. Register at gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Check your credit report for errors. Mistakes are more common than people realise — wrong addresses, incorrect account details, or accounts that are not yours. Dispute any errors directly with the credit reference agency.
Reduce credit utilisation
Credit utilisation — the percentage of your available credit limit you are using — is a major factor in your score. Aim to keep utilisation below 30% on each card and in total.
If you can pay down balances, do so. If you cannot immediately, ask your card provider for a credit limit increase (without a hard search if possible) — this lowers utilisation without changing the balance.
Build positive history
Set up direct debits for at least the minimum payment on every account. Even one missed payment can undo months of improvement.
A credit builder card can add positive history if you have a thin credit file. Spend a small amount each month and pay the balance in full. The credit builder products offered by credit unions are often better value than commercial credit builder cards.
What takes longer
Existing negative markers — late payments, defaults, CCJs — reduce in impact over time but are not removed early. A default typically reduces significantly in impact after three years and disappears after six.
Consistent positive payment behaviour over 12-24 months after a difficult period will show meaningful improvement.
