The Warm Home Discount is a scheme run by the government and energy suppliers that provides a one-off discount of one hundred and fifty pounds on the electricity bills of eligible low-income and vulnerable households. The discount is applied directly to the electricity account and does not arrive as a cash payment. It is available each winter, and the scheme runs from October through to the following March. Not all energy suppliers participate, but most of the major providers do.
The core group: automatic eligibility
The core group covers households where someone receives the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. If you or your partner receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit and your energy supplier participates in the scheme, the discount should be applied automatically — you do not need to apply. HMRC and DWP share data with suppliers to identify eligible households. You should receive a letter confirming the discount, typically between October and March. If you receive Pension Credit but have not received a confirmation letter, it is worth contacting your energy supplier directly to check.
The broader group: income and means-tested benefits
A broader group of households may also qualify if they receive certain means-tested benefits and have high energy costs. This group includes people on Universal Credit, Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and other low-income benefits, though the eligibility criteria for this group are more detailed. Eligibility is assessed based on a combination of benefit receipt and household energy costs and characteristics, and it varies year to year. The government and many energy suppliers publish updated eligibility details at the start of each scheme year.
How to apply if you are not in the automatic group
If you believe you may be eligible for the broader group but have not been contacted automatically, contact your energy supplier directly. Some suppliers have an application process for the broader group; others assess eligibility from government data without requiring you to apply. The government also operates a helpline for the scheme. Applications and assessments typically run between October and the end of February, so acting promptly after October each year is important — funds are limited and allocated on a first-come basis in some cases.
Other winter support worth checking
The Warm Home Discount is separate from Cold Weather Payments, which provide twenty-five pounds for each period of seven consecutive days of very cold weather for eligible benefit claimants. It is also separate from the Winter Fuel Payment, which is available to people who reached State Pension age before a qualifying date and currently meet means-test criteria following recent policy changes. These are distinct schemes with different eligibility rules and it is worth checking each one separately.
