The Warm Home Discount is a government-backed scheme that provides a £150 reduction on your electricity bill if you qualify. It is available to eligible customers of participating energy suppliers and applies each winter, typically between October and March. The discount is applied directly to your electricity account, not paid as cash.
Who qualifies?
There are two main routes to qualifying. The first is the Core Group, which includes people who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. If you are in this group, you should receive the discount automatically without needing to apply, as long as your energy supplier is part of the scheme. The second route is the Broader Group, which includes people on certain low-income and means-tested benefits. This group may need to apply directly to their supplier or may be contacted by the government.
How the automatic route works
If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, the government matches your details with the records held by energy suppliers. If a match is found, the discount should be applied automatically to your bill. You do not need to do anything, but it is worth checking your bill each winter to confirm the discount has been applied. If it has not, contact your energy supplier to query it.
What if you are in the Broader Group?
Eligibility for the Broader Group is more complex and varies by supplier and by year. Generally, people receiving Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or other means-tested benefits may qualify. Some suppliers contact eligible customers directly; others require an application. Check with your current energy supplier whether they participate in the scheme and whether you need to apply, and do so as early in the scheme year as possible as places may be limited.
What if you are with a supplier that does not participate?
Not all energy suppliers are part of the Warm Home Discount scheme. Larger suppliers are required to participate; smaller ones are not. If your current supplier does not offer the discount and you believe you would qualify, it may be worth comparing whether switching to a participating supplier saves money overall, taking the discount into account.
