The biggest family budget challenges
Childcare is often the single largest expense for families with young children — frequently exceeding rent or mortgage. This reduces sharply as children reach school age. Food costs per person are relatively lower for families but add up in total.
Childcare costs and support
Tax-Free Childcare: the government adds 20p for every 80p you contribute to an online childcare account — up to £2,000 per child per year. Universal Credit can cover up to 85% of childcare costs for working households.
Free childcare hours: 15 hours for 3-4 year olds (up to 30 hours for working parents). From 9 months for eligible working parents since 2024.
School costs
Uniform grants are available from many local councils. Free School Meals are available for qualifying households. School trip costs can be waived for children whose families are receiving certain benefits — ask the school.
Food
Bulk cooking, meal planning and switching to Aldi or Lidl are high-impact for families. Batch cooking and freezing reduces waste and saves time. Shop own-brand for staples — the quality gap with branded products is minimal.
Activities and entertainment
Libraries, parks, community sports and arts provision, free museums and local events provide free or low-cost family activities. Many councils and charities run holiday programmes to reduce childcare costs in school holidays.
