The Warm Home Discount is a scheme that provides a one-off reduction of one hundred and fifty pounds on a household's electricity bill. It is not paid as cash to you — it is applied directly to your energy account by your supplier. The scheme typically runs from October through to March each year.

Who is eligible

There are two main routes to the Warm Home Discount. The first is automatic eligibility for people who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. If you receive this benefit and your supplier is part of the scheme, you should receive the discount without needing to apply. Your supplier contacts you when the discount is being applied.

The second route covers a broader group of lower-income households. Eligibility is based on your income and household circumstances, including whether you receive certain means-tested benefits. This group is assessed using data held by the government, and eligible households are notified by their supplier. In some cases, suppliers also run their own scheme for vulnerable customers outside the core government eligibility criteria.

Which suppliers offer it

Larger energy suppliers are required to participate in the scheme. Smaller suppliers may also offer it voluntarily. If your supplier does not participate, you cannot receive the discount through them for that scheme year. This is worth factoring in if you are comparing tariffs and switching suppliers — confirming a supplier is part of the Warm Home Discount scheme can matter if you are likely to be eligible.

How to check and apply

If you are on the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you do not usually need to apply. Check that your supplier has the correct details for your account. For the broader group, the scheme is run differently each year and the process for confirming or applying varies by supplier. The GOV.UK page for Warm Home Discount is the most reliable place to check current eligibility criteria and which suppliers are participating in the current scheme year.

If you are on a prepayment meter

If you use a prepayment meter, the discount is applied as credit to your meter rather than as a reduction on a bill. The end result is the same — one hundred and fifty pounds worth of energy at no cost to you. Your supplier should notify you when the credit has been added.

Other help with energy costs

The Warm Home Discount sits alongside other energy-related support schemes including the Winter Fuel Payment for older households, Cold Weather Payments, and the Household Support Fund administered by local councils. If your energy costs are causing genuine hardship, contacting your supplier directly about their hardship fund is also worth doing — most large suppliers have provision to help customers in difficulty.
