How to make money from things you already own

Before looking for extra work or new income streams, it is worth checking what you already have. Many households are sitting on assets that could generate hundreds of pounds with relatively little effort.

There is a common assumption that generating extra income requires either extra time, extra skills, or starting something new. In many cases, the most accessible source of additional money is already sitting in your home, garage, or spare room. The challenge is usually not identifying that it exists but getting around to doing something about it.

Clothes and accessories you are no longer wearing

The average UK household has a significant amount of unworn clothing. Vinted, Depop, eBay and Facebook Marketplace all make it relatively straightforward to sell good-condition items. Designer or premium brands sell well on specialist resale platforms and can generate meaningful amounts. The process requires some initial effort in photographing and listing items, but once established it can generate a regular small income from items you would otherwise never use again.

Electronics and tech you have replaced

Old phones, tablets, laptops, games consoles and accessories depreciate rapidly but still hold real resale value, particularly if sold within a couple of years of the item being released. Platforms like MusicMagpie or Envirofone offer instant buy prices for electronics, which is quick but typically lower than a private sale. eBay or Gumtree for local collection tend to return more. Old cables, peripherals and accessories that seem worthless are often in demand from people who have lost theirs.

Tools, equipment and sporting goods

Power tools, garden equipment, camping gear, bikes, exercise equipment and musical instruments all have strong second-hand markets. Facebook Marketplace is particularly effective for large, heavy items that buyers prefer to collect locally. A collection of items that individually seem worth little can add up to a few hundred pounds when listed and sold individually over a few weeks.

Your car, driveway or garage

If you own a car and do not use it every day, peer-to-peer car sharing platforms allow you to rent it out when it is sitting idle. The income depends heavily on your location and the vehicle, but in busy urban areas this can generate a few hundred pounds per month with minimal effort. Similarly, if you have a driveway or garage in an area with limited parking, renting it out via a parking app can generate passive income with no effort once the listing is set up.

The spare room

The Rent a Room scheme allows UK homeowners and some tenants to earn up to £7,500 per year tax-free from renting a furnished room in their home. This is one of the most financially significant options on this list and is worth serious consideration if you have a room you are not using. The logistics and privacy implications are not negligible, but neither is £600 per month of additional tax-free income.
